Santo Domingo de Heredia - San José - Costa Rica

Santo Domingo is a beautiful city located almost equidistant between Heredia and San José in the heart of Central America. The city's 50,000 inhabitants are known for their friendliness and hospitality, so you will quickly feel at home here. Many families with children live in the pleasant surroundings, which include a park, charming churches, and quiet neighbourhoods. In the evenings there is much to do, as there is always something happening in the bars, restaurants, and pubs. Using the excellent public transportation system, you can reach Heredia and San José in only eight minutes.

Student life dominates the university city of Heredia of 100,000 inhabitants. There are many bars, restaurants, pubs, and dance clubs as well as great shops around the university quarter. Nevertheless, the city remains manageable and is in no way hectic.

San José, the cosmopolitan capital of Costa Rica (500,000 inhabitants), is situated in the heart of the country, in the middle of Valle Central (Central Valley). From this picturesque valley, you can enjoy an exquisite view of countless mountain peaks that frame San José and its surroundings. Numerous museums, theatres, bars, and restaurants as well as the vibrant nightlife of the "Ticos," the inhabitants of Costa Rica, ensure exciting diversion in the city. In addition, you can embark on excursions to destinations throughout the country from San José. Within a few hours, you can reach both the Pacific as well as the Atlantic oceans.

In brief

Christopher Columbus termed the land "the rich coast" when he arrived there centuries ago. But this country, situated between Panama and Nicaragua, has much more to offer in addition to an enchanting coastline. Despite its relatively small size (at 51,000 square kilometers [about 31,000 square miles], it is approximately as big as Switzerland), it is one of the most multifaceted countries in the world. Costa Rica offers especially ideal conditions for nature lovers and adventurers.

A third of the land is federally protected, and the bulk of the area consists of (partially unexplored) national parks, where you can experience up close unique animal and plant life with numerous species of birds, monkeys, crocodiles, turtles, tapirs, and jaguars. Take a day or overnight tour to one of the 72 volcanoes, ride a mountain bike through the mountains of Valle Central, marvel at the many waterfalls while rafting, or take advantage of the perfect conditions for surfing, wave riding, and diving in the crystal clear waters of the almost 1,500-kilometer-long (over 900-mile-long) Caribbean and Pacific coasts. Costa Rica a land full of culture and breathtaking nature.

Costa Rica is deemed a very progressive and safe country. Come to Costa Rica and experience "La Pura Vida" ("the pure life"), as the locals call it. The country attracts many tourists year round. The dry season during the summer (December through April) is high season, although Costa Rica is worth the trip even during the "green season."
